Germany and Neighbors Call for Stable US Trade Relations
Economy ministers from Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Liechtenstein urged the US for trade stability on Friday. They said tariffs damage global commerce.
The economy ministers of Germany, Switzerland, Austria, and Liechtenstein have issued a joint call for the United States to prioritize stable trade relations. During a high-level meeting in Zurich, the representatives of the four German-speaking nations stressed that strengthening economic cooperation is essential as uncertainty regarding American trade policy persists. The diplomatic push follows a recent decision by the U.S. Supreme Court to strike down sweeping tariffs that were imposed last year by President Donald Trump. In the wake of this ruling, the ministers emphasized the need to boost global competitiveness and remove existing barriers to trade.
German Economy Minister Katherina Reiche highlighted that the export-oriented structures of their respective economies rely heavily on predictable international commerce. She noted that trade restrictions have historically proved detrimental to both global markets and the domestic American economy.
