Freeport Delays Full Grasberg Mine Recovery to 2028
Freeport Indonesia has pushed back the full resumption of its Grasberg Block Cave underground mine to early 2028 due to infrastructure repairs. Operations are currently at roughly half capacity as workers modify ore handling systems to manage wetter material following a mudflow incident.
FREEPORT-MCMORAN INC delayed the return to full production at its Grasberg Block Cave underground mine in Indonesia until early 2028. The new timeline pushes back the recovery of the world's second-largest copper mine by one year following a severe mudflow incident in September 2023. Investors face a prolonged supply constraint from a key asset that is currently operating at 40% to 50% capacity.
### Infrastructure Challenges Slow Recovery Freeport Indonesia adjusted the schedule due to additional logistics and infrastructure requirements at the underground site. Company spokesperson Katri Krisnati said on Friday that the Grasberg Block Cave needs further work on ore handling systems. This follows a mudflow in September 2023 that disrupted the primary extraction areas.
