France is spearheading a coalition of more than 15 nations to facilitate the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital maritime corridor that typically handles one-fifth of the global oil supply, including significant flows of Brent Crude Oil. The initiative follows the announcement of a ceasefire between the United States and Iran, signaling a de-escalation in regional tensions. President Emmanuel Macron confirmed on Wednesday that the mission is intended to be strictly defensive and will be carried out in coordination with Iranian authorities to ensure the safe resumption of commercial traffic.

During a defense council meeting at the Elysee Palace, Macron detailed the international mobilization currently underway. He noted that the planning phase is already active, with France taking a lead role in organizing the multinational response to secure the waterway.

About 15 countries are currently mobilised and are participating in the planning, under Frances leadership, to enable the implementation of this strictly defensive mission in coordination with Iran to facilitate the resumption of traffic.

While the French president welcomed the cessation of hostilities between Washington and Tehran, he raised concerns regarding the stability of Lebanon. Macron emphasized that the current situation in Lebanon remains critical and urged for the country to be explicitly included in the broader diplomatic agreements to ensure regional peace is maintained.

Our wish in this context is to be assured that the ceasefire fully includes Lebanon.
