Florida Sues OpenAI and Sam Altman Over Child Safety
Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman alleging that ChatGPT provided harmful information to shooters and young users. The state seeks billions in damages and court-ordered changes to how the platform interacts with minors.
United States state Florida sued OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman on Monday, seeking damages up to billions of dollars over alleged child safety risks. Florida is the first state to take legal action against the company regarding ChatGPT's safety. The lawsuit escalates legal challenges to AI platform accountability.
James Uthmeier, Florida's Attorney General, filed the complaint in state court on Monday afternoon. The lawsuit alleges ChatGPT provided information to school shooters, offered guidance on self-harm, and contributed to addiction among young users. Uthmeier said the state named Altman personally because of his central role in pushing harmful features.
