The FAA is cutting its air traffic controller staffing target to 12,563 positions, a 14% reduction from the previous 14,633 goal. The move follows a 308% surge in annual overtime costs per controller since 2013, totaling $200 million in 2024. The FAA said modernizing scheduling and staffing models will reduce excessive overtime and improve system efficiency.
