EU says Chinese 5G vendors may deter Vietnam investors
EU official Jozef Sikela warned that Chinese 5G vendors could deter investment in Vietnam. He cited security concerns as a potential risk for foreign firms.
The involvement of Chinese vendors in the deployment of the 5G network in Vietnam could discourage foreign companies from committing capital to the Southeast Asian nation, according to a senior European Union official. While European telecommunications giants ERICSSON LM-A SHS and Nokia Oyj have been instrumental in developing the country's core 5G infrastructure, state-owned operators have recently pivoted toward awarding contracts to Chinese competitors, including Huawei and ZTE CORP-H.
This shift represents a change in strategy for the Vietnamese government, which had previously maintained a cautious stance toward technology from China. EU Commissioner for International Partnerships Jozef Sikela expressed concern regarding these developments during an investment forum in Hanoi.
