EU Trade Chief Demands China Open Markets to Retain Low Tariffs

EU Trade Chief Maros Sefcovic says low-tariff access for Chinese firms must depend on China opening its economy. He warns the trade deficit is unsustainable.

European Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic announced today that the European Union EUEU should make low-tariff access for Chinese CNCN companies conditional on the openness of the Chinese economy to European businesses. Speaking on February 20, 2026, Sefcovic linked the proposal to concerns regarding fairness under most-favoured-nation (MFN) tariff treatment and the broader rules of the World Trade Organization.
