EU Urged to Limit Duration of Energy Relief
European Economic Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis warned that government measures to ease high energy prices must include clear expiration dates and be carefully targeted to avoid fiscal mistakes from the 2022 energy crisis. He stressed that broad, unlimited support programs risk increasing fossil fuel demand while straining already tight government budgets, pointing to Germany and France's recent moves toward time-limited and sector-focused relief as better approaches.
European United States governments must establish clear expiration dates for energy relief measures to avoid repeating costly mistakes from the 2022 crisis, according to European Economic Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis.
Speaking at the International Monetary Fund in Washington on April 14, Dombrovskis emphasized that emergency measures to address high energy prices should be time-limited and carefully targeted. The current energy crisis stems partly from the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, triggered by the U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran, which has driven up prices for commodities including Brent Crude Oil and Natural Gas.
