EU to release first Ukraine loan tranche by early June

The European Union expects to release the first tranche of a 90 billion euro loan to Ukraine by late May or early June, ensuring the country's financial stability through 2026. This funding is critical for the UKRAINE GOVERNMENT as it continues to defend against the invasion launched by Russia in 2022. While Kyiv faced a potential liquidity crisis in April, contributions from international donors have maintained operations until the EU tranches are released. The disbursement follows a period of political gridlock in Hungary, where Prime Minister Viktor Orban had previously blocked the aid. However, following Orban's election loss on April 12, the incoming leadership under Peter Magyar has indicated a shift in policy, signaling an end to the obstruction of funds for Kyiv. European Economic Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis expressed cautious optimism regarding the transition. > "I do not want to be overly optimistic before seeing it happen, given the many delays so far," Dombrovskis stated. The comprehensive aid package is structured to provide 45 billion euros in 2026 and an additional 45 billion euros in 2027. The allocation includes 28 billion euros for military expenditures and 17 billion euros for general budgetary needs. This EU commitment covers roughly two-thirds of the total financing required by Kyiv, with the remaining third expected from a group of international partners including Canada, Japan, the United Kingdom, and Norway. > "In any case, I believe we will be able to unlock the situation," Dombrovskis added. Future disbursements will be tied to a series of legislative and structural reforms within the country. These measures are intended to harmonize local regulations with EU standards, supporting the nation's eventual goal of full membership in the European Union.
