Egypt Seeks Release of Citizens After Iran Seizes Tanker Near Qeshm Island

Iranian authorities seized a foreign tanker with 4 million litres of fuel near Qeshm. Egypt is now working to release four citizens among those detained.

The vessel was reportedly carrying 4 million litres of fuel linked to the fuel smuggling sector at the time of the operation. Iranianofficials stated that 16 foreign crew members have been detained on criminal charges.
The Egyptian foreign ministry EGEGstated on 28 January 2026 that it is working on securing the release of four of its citizens who were detained following the seizure. These four Egyptian crew members were identified as being on board the Reem alKhaleej (vessel), which is currently held at the Bandar Abbas port in Iran.
