ECB Official Warns of Adverse Euro Zone Economic Path
ECB official Primoz Dolenc warns the euro zone may be on an adverse path. Rate hikes could come soon if energy costs drive up broader price expectations now.
The euro zone economy may have already shifted onto an "adverse" path, according to European Central Bank policymaker Primoz Dolenc. He warned that inflation could become entrenched more rapidly than in previous years, as consumer behavior is now heavily influenced by recent memories of significant price increases. This shift comes as inflation surpassed the central bank's 2% target last month, driven largely by rising energy costs linked to geopolitical tensions in Iran.
While the ECB has maintained a baseline outlook for the region, it has also developed alternative scenarios to account for more severe economic hits. Dolenc suggested that the current reality is beginning to mirror these more difficult projections.
