Ebola deaths in eastern Congo rise to 131 as WHO warns
The World Health Organization expressed deep concern as Ebola fatalities in the Democratic Republic of Congo reached 131 following 26 new deaths in 24 hours. Authorities are monitoring cases across borders while the United States prepares to evacuate exposed citizens to Germany for care.
Ebola deaths in the Democratic Republic of the Congo rose to 131 as 26 fatalities were recorded in 24 hours. The outbreak involves the rare Bundibugyo strain and has spread to neighboring Uganda. Health funding cuts and diagnostic delays threaten regional stability and have triggered U.S. travel restrictions.
Authorities reported 543 suspected cases and 33 confirmed cases in DRC. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus declared the outbreak a public health emergency on Saturday. The virus reached Butembo, a city of hundreds of thousands, which recorded its first two cases the following day.
