The state-owned copper giant in Chile, Codelco, is facing intense scrutiny following a dramatic production slump at the start of 2026. This decline has cast a shadow over the record-breaking output figures reported at the end of 2025, which allowed the company to meet its annual targets. According to data from the state copper commission, Cochilco, January production fell to 91,000 metric tons, marking one of the lowest monthly totals in a decade. This represents a staggering 47% drop from the 172,300 metric tons reported in December 2025.

Industry analysts and former executives have raised questions regarding the validity of the December surge. While the monthly average for the first eleven months of 2025 was approximately 105,600 tons, the year-end spike far exceeded expectations. A former senior executive at the company noted that while figures are often optimized to meet targets, the current discrepancy is significant.

"At the very least, there was poor planning."

Internal documents suggest that specific divisions saw improbable gains. The Chuquicamata mine produced 25,000 tons from oxides in December, more than six times the projected 4,000 tons. Similarly, the Salvador division yielded 11,500 tons, more than double its 4,600-ton forecast. Codelco defended these results, citing the use of stockpiled inventory and improved operational performance at key sites.

Juan Ignacio Guzmán, CEO of mining consultancy GEM, indicated that while year-end pushes are common, such extreme deviations suggest either calculation errors or a lack of transparency. He suggested that when estimates fail to align with reality, internal audits are necessary to refine future forecasting.

"When companies stop competing and adopt practices that aren’t market-competitive, you start to see ‘kitchen-sink’ accounting so the numbers don’t look as bad."

The broader market, including firms like Copper Fox Metals Inc., remains focused on whether major producers can maintain stable supply chains. Codelco's long-term goal is to reach 1.7 million tons by 2030, but persistent issues with declining ore grades and delays in structural projects remain significant hurdles.

Operational difficulties were compounded by a fatal accident at the El Teniente mine in July, which resulted in the deaths of six workers and led to judicial investigations. Despite these setbacks, the company remains committed to its 2026 production target of 1.344 million tons. However, market experts remain skeptical about the sustainability of this growth given the internal challenges and the reliance on inventory drawdowns to mask production shortfalls.
