Airbus Hesitates on Larger A220 Launch as Demand Wavers
Airbus is reconsidering the timing for a stretched A220 jet as leasing companies show muted interest and airlines express concerns over potential range trade-offs. While the manufacturer previously hinted at a summer debut, executives now suggest a launch during the Farnborough Airshow is unlikely.
Airbus is delaying the launch of a larger A220 jet after leasing companies and airlines raised concerns over its range and engine performance. Airbus previously signaled a potential debut for the stretched model during the Farnborough Airshow in late July. A successful launch is critical to turning the loss-making A220 program profitable following its $1 acquisition from Bombardier in 2018 after the Canadian firm ran short of cash.
### Range and Engine Reliability Concerns The proposed upgrade would increase capacity to 180 passengers, up from the current 160-seat limit. While this "simple stretch" could reduce per-seat costs by 10%, two people familiar with the project said it would also result in shorter flight ranges. This trade-off has cooled interest among carriers that prioritize flexibility for longer routes.
