Two Chinese Firms Secure Zimbabwe Lithium Export Quotas
Zimbabwe granted lithium export quotas to two Chinese firms after a suspension. The government now requires more local mineral processing from producers.
Zimbabwe has granted lithium export quotas to two prominent Chinese mining firms, ending a two-month suspension on the export of key battery materials from Africa's leading producer. The move follows a period of regulatory tightening aimed at curbing illegal trade and encouraging domestic processing.
CHENGXIN LITHIUM GROUP CO-A and SINOMINE RESOURCE GROUP CO-A, both of which manage significant mining operations in Zimbabwe, were the recipients of the new quotas. The Zimbabwean government had halted exports of all raw minerals and lithium concentrates in February, citing alleged malpractices and leakages. However, authorities recently signaled a resumption of trade under new conditions that prioritize local value addition.
