Luanshya Copper Mine to Restart Production in August
The Luanshya Copper Mine will resume operations this August following a massive dewatering project. The site aims to produce 100,000 tons of copper annually.
The mining sector in Zambia is poised for a significant boost as the Luanshya Copper Mine prepares to resume operations in August 2026, ending a production hiatus that has lasted more than two decades. The facility, which is majority-owned by China Nonferrous Mining Corporation (CNMC), has been idle due to severe flooding that caused extensive damage to its underlying infrastructure.
CNMC holds an 80% stake in the venture, while the state-linked investment arm ZCCM-IH maintains a 20% share. Before redevelopment could begin, the site required an intensive dewatering process. According to the mines ministry, approximately 87.9 million cubic metres of water have been pumped out as of late March, clearing the path for the construction of new shaft systems and a concentrator plant.
