Yen Gains as BOJ and Fed Keep Interest Rates Unchanged
The yen rose and the dollar held steady as central banks in Japan and the U.S. kept rates unchanged. Markets are tracking oil prices and regional tensions.
The Japanese yen strengthened on Thursday while the United States dollar remained largely stable as investors processed interest rate decisions from the central banks of both nations. The market activity occurred against a backdrop of heightened geopolitical tensions in the Middle East involving Iran and Israel, which have influenced energy prices and central bank outlooks.
In Japan, the central bank elected to keep its interest rate at 0.75% and maintained its view that the economy is recovering at a moderate pace. The USD/JPY pair saw the yen firm by 0.3% to 159.40 per dollar following the announcement. David Chao, a global market strategist based in Singapore, noted that the current environment has made policy signals particularly difficult to interpret.
