Vietnam Communist Party congress opens with ambitious economic growth goals

VNconvened its quinquennial congress in Hanoi on January 20, 2026, to determine the nation's top leadership and establish strategic economic objectives for the next five years. Nearly 1,600 delegates gathered in a red-carpeted hall, seated on red-upholstered chairs facing a statue of party founder Ho Chi Minh and images of Karl Marx and Vladimir Lenin. During the opening session, party chief To Lam to lam, 68, delivered a 40-minute address pledging that the country would achieve annual economic growth of no less than 10% through 2030. This ambitious target follows a period where the government missed its previous goal of 6.5% to 7.0% growth for the first half of the decade.
