The number of Americans filing new applications for unemployment benefits remained unchanged last week, while layoffs saw a significant decline in February, signaling stable conditions within the labor market of the United States. According to data released by the Labor Department, initial claims for state unemployment benefits held steady at a seasonally adjusted 213,000 for the week ended February 28, a figure slightly lower than the 215,000 claims forecasted by economists. The labor market is currently stabilizing after experiencing volatility last year. While the U.S. Supreme Court recently struck down specific import duties, the administration responded by implementing a 10% global tariff, which is expected to rise to 15%. The Federal Reserve's latest Beige Book report described employment levels as generally stable, noting that seven of the twelve districts reported no change in hiring activity. A separate report from the outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas showed that U.S.-based employers announced 48,307 job cuts in February. This represents a 55% decrease from January and a 72% drop compared to the same period last year. Although hiring plans surged by 140% month-over-month, they remain 63% lower than the levels recorded in February of the previous year. The data also indicated that some individuals are facing prolonged periods of unemployment. Continuing claims, which track the number of people receiving benefits after an initial week of aid, increased by 46,000 to a seasonally adjusted 1.868 million during the week ended February 21. Market attention is now turning to the upcoming February employment report, with economists predicting a payroll increase of 59,000 jobs and an unemployment rate of 4.3%.
