US Treasury Lowers Q4 Borrowing to $618B

The US Treasury reduced its fourth-quarter borrowing estimate to $618 billion due to a higher starting cash balance. Officials also projected borrowing $800 billion for the first quarter of 2027 while preparing upcoming refunding plans.

The United States Treasury lowered its fourth-quarter borrowing estimate on Monday afternoon to $618 billion, down $10 billion from its August projection. The revision reflects a higher-than-assumed starting cash balance that offset lower projected net cash flows. Excluding that larger cash cushion, borrowing needs actually increased by $24 billion above previous estimates.
