US Transportation Department proposes major increase in Buy America rules for EV chargers

The U.S. Transportation Department announced a proposal on February 10, 2026, to raise the American-content requirement for federally funded electric vehicle charging stations from 55% to up to 100%. This change is designed to alter the eligibility conditions for the $7.5 billion federal electric vehicle charging stations program. The initiative is being implemented across the US
US to ensure that federal funds support domestic industrial growth.
The department, with the proposal involving Sean Duffy, presents the measure as a strategic way to strengthen domestic manufacturing and create U.S. jobs. By increasing the required American content, the government aims to increase competitiveness and address national security concerns related to the supply chain. This policy shift specifically targets the electric vehicle charging infrastructure sector, affecting how manufacturers and suppliers participate in federally funded projects.
