US judge holds private talks on $175 billion tariff refunds
Judge Richard Eaton meets with government lawyers today to discuss $175 billion in tariff refunds. The goal is a streamlined process for 300,000 importers.
A federal judge in the United States is scheduled to hold a private settlement conference on Friday to establish a framework for refunding up to $175 billion in tariffs that were recently declared unconstitutional. Judge Richard Eaton of the U.S. Court of International Trade will meet with government attorneys to discuss the logistics of reimbursing more than 300,000 importers. The meeting follows a landmark Supreme Court decision on February 20 that found the executive branch had exceeded its legal authority in imposing the trade levies.
Government lawyers have described the refund process as unprecedented in scale, requiring a manual review of tens of millions of payments linked to 79 million individual shipments. While court proceedings are typically open to the public, the court clerk confirmed that Friday's session is a closed-door settlement conference intended to facilitate an efficient administrative process.
