US software shares fall on renewed AI disruption fears
US software shares fell today as Anthropic's new AI model sparked concerns over legacy systems. Major firms including Adobe and Salesforce saw declines.
Software shares in the United States tumbled on Thursday as renewed anxieties regarding artificial intelligence-driven disruptions weighed on investor sentiment. The downturn follows a recent update from AI startup Anthropic, which has reignited fears that advanced automation could pose an existential threat to traditional software business models. The S&P 500 Software and Services Index fell 2.6% on Thursday, bringing its total decline for the year to 25.5%. While broader market risk appetite had been temporarily lifted by hopes for a geopolitical truce, the underlying concerns about the software sector's future in an AI-dominated landscape have quickly returned to the forefront.
"Were getting back to being concerned about the prior software-specific concerns stemming from AI and private credit that are coming back to the fore," said Steve Sosnick, chief market analyst at Interactive Brokers.
