US job openings hit 7.6 million in April
U.S. job openings increased to 7.618 million in April, the highest level since May 2024, despite a decline in hiring amid economic uncertainty. The Labor Department report suggests a firming labor market that may lead the Federal Reserve to maintain current interest rates into next year.
The United States labor market saw job openings surge by 731,000 to 7.618 million by the final day of April. This total represents the highest level of labor demand since May 2024, far exceeding the 6.88 million openings forecast by Reuters economists. For investors, the data suggests a resilient labor market that may keep interest rates elevated despite a slowdown in actual hiring.
### Labor Demand Hits Two-Year Peak The job openings rate jumped to 4.6% from 4.2% in March, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics JOLTS report released Tuesday afternoon. While demand for workers spiked, actual hiring decreased by 419,000 to 5.116 million during the same period. The hires rate fell to 3.2% from 3.5% in March as economic uncertainty weighed on recruitment.
