US Factory Orders Edge Up in August
New orders for US factory goods edged up 0.1 percent in August as strong demand for electrical equipment and machinery offset weakness in commercial aircraft orders. An ongoing AI infrastructure buildout helped support manufacturing activity despite headwinds from rising energy prices and supply chain disruptions.
New orders for United States factory goods edged up 0.1% in August following a downwardly revised 0.8% jump in July. The Commerce Department's Census Bureau reported the data on Friday afternoon. Economists had forecast a 0.1% gain, matching the actual result.
Strong demand for electrical equipment and machinery offset a 4.3% drop in commercial aircraft orders. On a year-over-year basis, factory orders increased 6.8% in August.
