United States defence firm Covenant plans to begin producing intermediate-range missiles near Leipzig from late 2027, people familiar with the matter said Friday afternoon. The project targets production capacity of up to 1,000 units annually for missiles with a range exceeding 1,500 kilometres. The expansion addresses a European capability gap as nations seek cost-effective, regionally sourced alternatives to high-end long-range weapon systems.
### Leipzig Production Hub Most components for the planned missiles will be sourced from Germany and other European countries, people familiar with the matter said. Covenant and the German defence ministry declined to comment on the arrangement. The initiative follows the United States decision to forgo supplying Tomahawk cruise missiles to Germany, forcing Berlin to accelerate domestic procurement.
