US Business Inventories Fall 0.1 Percent in January
US business inventories fell 0.1% in January as wholesale stocks declined, potentially weighing on first-quarter growth. Sales rose 0.3% during the same period.
Business inventories in the United States experienced an unexpected decline in January, primarily driven by a significant reduction in stocks held by wholesalers. This development suggests that inventory investment may act as a drag on economic growth during the first quarter of the year.
According to data released by the Commerce Department's Census Bureau on Wednesday, inventories dipped 0.1% following a flat reading in December. This result contrasted with the expectations of economists polled by Reuters, who had anticipated a modest 0.1% increase for the month. Despite the monthly decline, total inventories were up 1.0% on a year-over-year basis.
