Major low-cost carriers in the United States are intensifying their push for legislative intervention as energy markets react to geopolitical instability. CEOs from several budget airlines are scheduled to meet with Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy on Tuesday to discuss the industry's economic challenges.

The primary objective of the meeting is to secure temporary tax relief to mitigate the financial pressure caused by soaring jet fuel prices. These costs have risen sharply following the outbreak of conflict involving Iran. A coalition representing carriers such as Spirit Airlines, Frontier Airlines, Allegiant Air, Sun Country Airlines Holding, and Avelo formally requested assistance from congressional leaders last week.

The airlines are specifically advocating for the suspension of the 7.5% federal excise tax on airline tickets alongside the $5.30 per segment tax. Industry advocates argue that these measures are necessary to maintain affordable service during a period of extreme volatility.

Waiving the fees would offset about one-third of the incremental cost of higher jet fuel.

The Association of Value Airlines noted that the proposed tax waivers would significantly alleviate the burden on low-cost operators, who are more sensitive to fuel price fluctuations than their larger legacy counterparts.
