UniCredit CEO Prioritizes Commerzbank Over Italian Deals
CEO Andrea Orcel says UniCredit is prioritizing a Commerzbank deal over Italian mergers. Complex shareholder structures make domestic deals harder to negotiate.
Andrea Orcel, the Chief Executive Officer of UniCredit S.p.A., has stated that the bank's current priority is its pan-European strategy, specifically a potential combination with Commerzbank AG, rather than immediate domestic consolidation. Speaking at a financial conference hosted by Morgan Stanley in the United Kingdom, Orcel noted that while further tie-ups in Italy could present future opportunities, the process is currently stalled by shareholder dynamics.
The CEO explained that consolidation within the Italian banking sector is primarily determined by the shareholders who maintain control over their respective institutions. He identified three mid-sized lenders often linked to merger speculation: Banco BPM S.p.A., where CREDIT AGRICOLE SA is a major shareholder; BPER BANCA SPA, which is significantly influenced by Unipol Assicurazioni S.p.A.; and Monte dei Paschi di Siena, where the Del Vecchio and Caltagirone families are key investors.
