UN refugee agency faces severe funding shortfalls
The UN refugee agency has secured only 35 percent of its required funding for the year, forcing deep operational cuts and massive staff reductions globally. High Commissioner Barham Salih warned that further restructuring cannot compensate for shrinking donor support.

Deep funding shortfalls are forcing the UN refugee agency to cut operations worldwide, securing only $3 billion, or 35% of its $8.5 billion 2026 requirement. The budget squeeze follows donor reductions from countries including the United States during a period of record global displacement. The shortfall threatens core humanitarian services, prompting staff reductions from 20,000 to under 12,000 employees since 2024.
