UK Retailers Warn of Potential Price Increases Amid Rising Inflation

The British Retail Consortium (BRC) has reported that annual shop price inflation in the UK rose to 0.7% in December 2024, a slight increase from November's 0.6%. This uptick marks the continuation of a trend that has seen food prices accelerate, with a 3.3% rise in December compared to 3.0% in November. Non-food items, however, experienced a deflation of 0.6% for the second consecutive month.
The retail sector is bracing for further challenges as it anticipates a 4.1% increase in the minimum wage, set to take effect in April 2026. This wage hike, announced in the October 2024 budget by finance minister Rachel Reeves rachel reeves, will raise the hourly rate to £12.71. Retailers are also contending with higher public policy costs, which could exacerbate inflationary pressures and make it difficult to curb price hikes in 2026.
