The labor market in the United Kingdom is showing signs of stabilization as the downturn in hiring begins to ease. According to a recent survey conducted by the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) and KPMG, starting salaries for permanent employees declined in February at the slowest rate recorded since October. While the overall number of new permanent hires remains in contraction territory, the monthly gauge for placements reached its highest level in nearly three years. The permanent staff placements index rose significantly to 49.2 in February, up from 46.9 in January. Although a reading below 50 indicates contraction, the upward trend suggests the market is nearing a turning point. In contrast to the permanent sector, the temporary staff hiring index saw a decline, falling to 48.0 from 50.3 in the previous month. The survey also highlighted a sharp increase in the availability of candidates for permanent positions, while the supply of temporary workers grew at its slowest pace in more than a year. These findings were based on data collected from approximately 400 recruitment agencies between February 10 and February 23. Jon Holt, group chief executive and UK senior partner at KPMG, noted that the current data represents the strongest signs of improvement seen in several years: > Despite a marginal fall in hiring last month, the jobs market was showing its strongest signs of improvement in three years, with hiring at its closest point to turning positive.
