UK Military Adopts SpaceX Starshield for Operations
Britain has started transitioning its operational military communications to SpaceX's Starshield satellite network. This move makes the UK one of the first international partners to adopt the secure government version of the Starlink system ahead of SpaceX's planned public offering.
The United Kingdom has reportedly adopted SpaceX’s militarized Starshield satellite network for operational military traffic according to two people familiar with the matter. This transition follows the British military's initial use of standard Starlink terminals starting in mid-2022. The move highlights the growing role of private satellite constellations in national security frameworks as governments seek enhanced security for sensitive communications.
### Transitioning to Secure Military Channels Two people familiar with the matter said the British defense ministry began moving operational traffic to Starshield around the beginning of this year. However, the ministry told Reuters it does not use Starlink for military operations and only utilizes the service for non-operational purposes, such as allowing personnel to contact family. The ministry did not comment specifically on Starshield but noted it uses a range of suppliers for its armed forces.
