UK grocery inflation remains at 4.3 percent in March
UK grocery inflation held at 4.3% in March as rising energy costs threaten to push food prices higher. Tesco and Sainsburys gained market share this month.
Grocery inflation in the United Kingdom remained at 4.3% during the four weeks ending March 22, according to the latest data from Worldpanel by Numerator. This steady rate of inflation continues to strain household budgets as consumers prepare for potential price increases linked to the conflict in Iran and its impact on global energy costs. The Worldpanel figures provide an early look at pricing trends ahead of the official government data release scheduled for April 22.
Price growth has been most significant in categories such as unprocessed meat and coffee, while prices for butter and sugar confectionery have seen a decline. Agricultural producers have warned that the rising costs of energy and fertilizer will likely lead to higher prices for greenhouse-grown crops, including tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers, starting next month. Worldpanel noted that every 1% increase in the grocery inflation rate could add more than 50 pounds to the average annual household bill.
