UK Consumer Spending and Retail Sales Rebound in May
British consumer spending grew by 0.8 percent in May following a decline in April as warm weather drove sales of summer clothing and outdoor goods. While retail sales saw their largest increase since 2025, travel expenditure fell for a third month amid economic caution.
United Kingdom consumers increased retail spending by 3.7% in May, reversing a 3.0% decline from the previous month. Data from BARCLAYS PLC showed overall consumer spending grew 0.8% annually, up from a 0.1% decline in April. The recovery was driven by warm weather and early May holidays, marking the strongest retail sales growth since April 2025.
### Heatwave Drives Retail Recovery A May heatwave triggered a surge in summer essentials, with clothing and footwear returning to growth. British Retail Consortium (BRC) chief executive Helen Dickinson said shoppers prioritized outdoor toys, fans, and barbecue food during the bank holiday periods. Total retail sales for the period from May 3 through May 30 outperformed the previous year's contraction.
