TikTok plans second 1 billion euro data centre in Finland
TikTok will invest 1 billion euros in a second Finnish data centre. The Lahti facility is part of an initiative to store European user data on the continent.
TikTok has announced plans to invest 1 billion euros ($1.16 billion) to construct its second data centre in Finland within a single year. This move is part of a broader strategy to migrate the data storage of its 200 million European users to the continent, addressing increasing regulatory pressure regarding data protection and algorithmic safety.
The new facility will be established in Lahti, located in the southern region of the country. It is expected to launch with an initial capacity of 50 megawatts (MW), with the potential to expand to 128 MW. This investment forms a core component of the company's 12 billion euro European data sovereignty initiative, which aims to provide advanced security measures for user information.
