Three vessels struck by projectiles in Strait of Hormuz
Three ships were hit by projectiles in the Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday. Three crew are missing from a Thai vessel while two other ships reported minor damage.
Maritime security risks in the Strait of Hormuz reached a critical point on Wednesday as three additional merchant vessels were struck by projectiles. These latest incidents bring the total number of ships targeted in the region to at least 14 since the start of the conflict involving Iran, the United States, and Israel on February 28. Shipping through this vital corridor has slowed significantly, impacting approximately 20% of the world's oil supply and driving global energy prices to their highest levels since 2022.
The Thailand-flagged dry bulk vessel Mayuree Naree suffered the most severe damage after being hit by two projectiles while transiting the strait. The ship's operator, Precious Shipping Public Company Limited, reported that the strikes caused a fire and damaged the engine room. While 20 crew members were safely evacuated to Oman, three remain missing and are believed to be trapped in the engine room.
