The Nature Conservancy is currently in negotiations with three African nations to establish debt-for-nature swaps valued at a combined $500 million. These financial arrangements are designed to generate funding for the protection of vital ecosystems while helping developing countries manage their debt loads. Ademola Ajagbe, the regional managing director for Africa at the global environmental group, noted that one deal is expected to conclude this year, with two others following in 2027.
