TVA Approves Higher Rates for Data Centers
The Tennessee Valley Authority board approved higher electricity rates for data centers to protect other ratepayers amid surging power demand. Existing facilities face phased increases, while new data centers face capacity commitment charges.
Tennessee Valley Authority approved a 10% electricity rate hike for data centers on August 20 afternoon, moving them out of the manufacturing customer class. The unanimous vote in Memphis follows surging power demand across the utility's seven-state service region. The federal utility aims to shield residential ratepayers from soaring energy costs driven by artificial intelligence expansion.
Data centers represented 20% of industrial power demand across the United States utility's service area in early 2026, a figure projected to double by 2030. TVA Chief Financial Officer Tom Rice said the new pricing structure protects the grid.
