STOXX 600 Index Gains 3.7 Percent After US-Iran Ceasefire
European markets rallied on Wednesday after a two-week ceasefire between the US and Iran led to a drop in oil prices. The STOXX 600 rose 3.7 percent today.
European equity markets recorded their strongest performance in a year on Wednesday, buoyed by a significant diplomatic breakthrough between the United States and Iran. The announcement of a two-week ceasefire agreement triggered a widespread relief rally, as investors anticipated the potential reopening of the Strait of Hormuz for global trade. The pan-European STOXX 600 index surged 3.7% to close at 612.32 points, marking its largest single-day percentage gain in twelve months.
Regional indices across the continent followed suit, with the DAX in Germany rising 4.7% and the CAC 40 in France gaining 4.5%. The ceasefire was finalized just hours before a critical deadline for the reopening of key shipping lanes, causing oil prices to slide below the $100-per-barrel threshold. However, market sentiment remained tempered by ongoing geopolitical friction, as Israel continued to conduct strikes in Lebanon.
