Spanish Watchdog Probes Energy Firms Over 2025 Blackout
Spain is probing energy firms and the grid operator for rule breaches after a 2025 blackout. The investigation focuses on administrative infringements.
The energy and competition regulator in Spain announced on Friday the opening of formal investigations into the nation's largest energy providers and its power grid operator. The probes follow an unprecedented blackout that affected both the Spanish territory and Portugal last year, with officials citing evidence of prolonged breaches of power sector regulations.
The National Commission on Markets and Competition (CNMC) has targeted grid operator Red Electrica, a subsidiary of Redeia, alongside major industry players IBERDROLA SA, NATURGY ENERGY GROUP SA, ENDESA SA, and REPSOL SA. Additionally, the watchdog is scrutinizing the operations of several individual power plants. While Iberdrola and Endesa have declined to provide statements, other involved entities have yet to respond to inquiries.
