Spain Approves Uber and WeRide Robotaxi Testing
Spanish authorities granted the first national permits enabling autonomous vehicle testing on public roads for Uber and WeRide. Commercial services in Madrid are targeted for launch by the end of the year, marking their first joint European robotaxi deployment.
UBER TECHNOLOGIES INC and WERIDE INC-ADR secured regulatory approval on Thursday afternoon to test autonomous vehicles on public roads in Spain. The Directorate-General for Traffic issued the national permit for WeRide's GXR vehicle. Commercial services are slated to begin by the end of the year in Madrid, pending operational milestones.
The authorization marks the first national approval for the GXR model within the European Union. China-based WeRide will supply the autonomous driving technology, while Uber will integrate the fleet into its ride-hailing application. Fleet operations will be managed by AVOMO, the autonomous vehicle division of Moove Cars Group.
