South African Rand Weakens Amid Iran Deadline Concerns
The rand weakened to 16.93 per dollar on Tuesday as markets awaited a deadline for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. High oil prices weigh on the currency.
The South Africa rand weakened in early trade on Tuesday as investors remained cautious ahead of a deadline set by the United States for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. At 0737 GMT, the USD/ZAR was trading at 16.93 against the dollar, down about 0.4% from its previous close.
Geopolitical tensions have escalated as Iran and Israel exchanged military strikes, with Tehran refusing to reopen the critical shipping chokepoint or accept a ceasefire deal on the eve of the American administration's deadline. This conflict in the Middle East has sent energy prices soaring, with both Brent Crude Oil and West Texas Oil holding above $110 a barrel.
