South Africa Risks Return to FATF Grey List

South Africa faces a significant risk of returning to the FATF money laundering grey list. Business groups warn that stalled anti-corruption reforms and law enforcement weaknesses could trigger renewed international financial scrutiny.

South Africa faces a risk of returning to the Financial Action Task Force grey list barely a year after exiting, business lobby group Business Leadership South Africa said in an October briefing. A relisting would increase transaction scrutiny, raise compliance costs for businesses, and deter foreign investment. The warning comes as anti-corruption reforms remain stalled at a score of 51.2 out of 100, lagging behind the broader national reform index of 72.5.
