Topsoe Wins 1 Billion Dollar South Africa Ammonia Deal
The Coega green ammonia project in South Africa has partnered with Denmark's Topsoe to supply electrolyser technology for its 5.8 billion dollar plant. The facility aims to produce 1 million metric tons of green ammonia by 2030 for international markets.
The Coega Green Ammonia Project will purchase $1 billion in electrolyser technology and equipment from Denmark-based Topsoe. The deal supports a $5.8 billion facility on the east coast of South Africa designed to produce 1 million metric tons of green ammonia annually by 2030. The agreement secures critical hardware for one of Africa's largest renewable energy ventures as global demand for carbon-free chemicals accelerates.
### Cutting Capex Through Advanced Technology The project is a joint venture between United Kingdom-based Hive Energy and South African partner BuiltAfrica. Hive Energy CEO Giles Redpath stated that the selected technology would reduce renewable energy capital expenditure by more than 0.5 billion euros ($582.2 million). This efficiency is vital as Hive Energy competes with similar hydrogen and ammonia hubs in Morocco and Namibia.
