Solar overtakes coal in China power capacity

Solar farms surpassed coal plants in July to become China's largest source of installed power capacity. China recorded 1288 gigawatts of solar capacity by the end of July. However coal remains the leader in actual electricity generation.

China's solar capacity reached 1,288 gigawatts in July, surpassing coal's 1,285 gigawatts to become the nation's largest installed power source. The milestone follows renewable capacity growth driven by prior installations and policy shifts. Despite leading in capacity, solar generation lags behind coal due to intermittency.
