US companies challenge Trump global tariffs in court
Two US firms sued the Trump administration Monday over new 10 percent tariffs. The lawsuit claims the move misuses trade laws to bypass a recent court ruling.
Two small businesses have initiated a legal challenge against the administration of the United States regarding a new round of global tariffs. The lawsuit, filed on Monday, disputes the legality of a 10-percent tax on imported goods, with plaintiffs arguing that the executive branch cannot utilize alternative statutory frameworks to bypass a recent Supreme Court ruling that invalidated previous trade measures.
The legal action was brought by spice importer Burlap & Barrel, Inc. and toy manufacturer Basic Fun Inc. Their arguments mirror a separate challenge recently filed by a coalition of 24 states, asserting that President Donald Trump is basing the new tariffs on a misinterpretation of an archaic trade law. The plaintiffs contend the law in question was designed to address historical monetary concerns rather than standard trade deficits.
