Serbian student movement unseats leader Vucic
Serbias student protest movement has unseated long-time leader Aleksandar Vucic in a historic election. The political unknowns now face the challenge of governing and reforming public institutions.
Serbia's student protest movement unseated a political giant in Sunday's election, capturing a historic victory after two years of demonstrations. The stunning upset leaves political unknowns with no governing experience in charge of Europe's largest Western Balkan economy. The outcome will shape stability and diplomatic ties with China, Russia, and the European Union.
The victory follows the deaths of 16 people in a 2024 railway station canopy collapse in Novi Sad, which sparked widespread anti-corruption protests. The movement bypassed traditional figureheads to select 250 academics, lawyers, and farmers for its candidate list. Teneo Global Research noted that bureaucratic resistance and limited governing experience could make the transition challenging.
