Savannah Speeds Up Portugal Lithium Project Development
Savannah Resources is accelerating its lithium project in Portugal with plans for a 50 year mine life. Production is set for 2028 to reduce reliance on China.
Savannah Resources Plc is accelerating development at its flagship lithium project in Portugal, aiming to bolster Europe's domestic supply chain and reduce its strategic dependence on China. Recent exploration at the Barroso deposit has significantly expanded the project's scope, with confirmed resources of spodumene—a critical battery mineral—rising to 39 million metric tons. This expansion places the project among the most significant developments in the sector, comparable in strategic importance to international operations such as those managed by Lithium Argentina AG.
CEO Emanuel Proença indicated that further extensions could push total resources beyond 100 million metric tons, potentially extending the mine's operational life to more than 50 years. This growth comes as work has accelerated in recent months across engineering, environmental compliance, and project financing.
