US and Russia Veto UN Western Sahara Resolutions

Russia and the United States vetoed rival UN resolutions on Western Sahara, leaving the peacekeeping mission without a renewed mandate before its expiration. The breakdown deepens a long-running dispute over the territory controlled by Morocco.

Russia and the United States vetoed rival resolutions on Western Sahara at the Security Council on Friday, leaving the UN peacekeeping mission without a renewed mandate. The showdown threatens the future of a mission renewed for decades and deepens a dispute over the territory controlled by Morocco and claimed by the Algeria-backed Polisario Front. The peacekeeping mission, known as MINURSO, is set to cost $62 million in the fiscal year that started in June.
